A Series of Orchids, Watercolor on Paper, 1996-99

Winters are especially difficult up here in the mountains. I am constantly seeking new material, and tired of the Still Life, Portrait, and Landscape paintings I'd been creating, I chose to begin working with flowers. Through a beautiful (but costly) catalog (see link below) that sold fresh flowers, I spent some time during the last three winters working with the orchids that I'd purchased from this catalog. Most were a variety called variegated dendrobiums, though some of the orchids were also of the jaguar mokara variety. I found the contrast between the various colors, textures, and pattern of the flowers to be fascinating. In all, working from the beautiful jewels of nature was truly a beloved event in what would have been otherwise dreary winters. Here, I introduce my visions in watercolor for the first time..
